Amazing how quickly some things have been changing in the goalkeeper area with the Flames. This photo that I took during the short Training Camp pre-season of the 3 goalies, is quite different than today’s active duty. Miikka Kiprusoff of course should be back any day, but to think that there was a time a few days after this was taken when the jostle for both Leland Irving and Henrik Karlsson for the backup spot came to an end. After Karlsson was off to the Blackhawks organization, even then Leland Irving was only with the big club for a short period before he was removed from the line up – this is probably one of the last photos of the three of these goalies with the club. From the brief encounters I had with Leland and Henrik, which was just signing a stick I got at the Fanattic shop by Henrik and one of the photos I took of Leland etc. they seemed very charming, and by all accounts I had heard by those who had encountered them as well they were good guys to have around and work with.
We’ve all been so pleased with Joey MacDonald’s performance as backup now, since he arrived as a new addition to the Flames goal tending team. I asked him during practice when he arrived and before he had a game how he was doing, he said he was still in a hotel, and knew Calgary somewhat – I assume had been through with the many teams he had been backup goalie with over the years, most recently Detroit Red Wings, whose insignia is on his helmet even now as his new Flames artwork is being done on the upcoming headgear. He said he’s from Nova Scotia, which I didn’t know at the time. It’s been very interesting reading up on his history, somewhat of a veteran yet hasn’t really been a main man between the pipes on a full time basis in the NHL. I’d say he’s looking pretty darn good filling in for Kipper at the moment and sure looks like he could handle it.
